Robot assisted surgery
Mr McKenna is trained to deliver MAKO Robot-Assisted Hip and Knee Replacement. Robot-assisted surgery is a fantastic tool to deliver more accurate component positioning than conventional methods. It is particularly beneficial in patients with complex anatomy (previous fractures around the knee, spinal fusions). It can also be used to deliver increased accuracy of component position in the standard hip or knee. Accuracy of implant positioning has been demonstrated to be better with Robotic Assistance than conventional techniques. This has been shown to translate to shorter length of stay and reduced post operative pain. It may ultimately lead to improved function.

What is the process?
A CT scan of your hip or knee is performed 2 weeks before surgery. The scan is uploaded to Stryker Engineers in the US. Mr McKenna discusses optimal component positioning with the engineers and then the plan is set. On the day of surgery, further adjustments are made, individualising the plan to you and your hip/knee. In the surgery the approach is performed by Mr McKenna and then the Robot arm is brought in to make the bone cuts and deliver the perfect plan. The robot arm is under the direct control of the surgeon and is completely safe. Once the bone cuts are made the implants are inserted. The implants are assessed against the preoperative plan. Finally, the tissues are closed by the surgeon in the conventional way.

“Dear Mr McKenna, I would like to convey my sincere thanks to you personally and the members of your team for replacing my tired hip, thereby relieving me of the constant pain I had endured for the previous five months.”
